Pairing Cannabis and Coffee

There are a few things to consider when you’re pairing cannabis and coffee. Your two main considerations should be flavour and effect:

1. Flavour

There are a variety of flavours and strains of both coffee and cannabis. When you’re pairing them, you want to make sure they complement one another. Think of it the same way you’d think of pairing wine and cheese. When you’ve got the pairing right, you get a deeper appreciation for the flavours of both. But if you get it wrong, you’re not likely to reach for that wine again.

If it’s your first time pairing a cannabis strain with coffee stop and think about the foods and flavours you usually enjoy with your coffee. Do you like citrus? Or bitter chocolate? Then try to find a cannabis strain that suits your tastes.

If you need a little extra help, speak to your barista and budtender. Your barista can tell you what flavours pair well with your coffee and your budtender will point you to strains with the right flavour profiles.

2. Effects

Coffee’s effects are pretty obvious, but cannabis also has a wide range of possible effects. You’ll also want to consider the effects of your cannabis in combination with the coffee. We recommend a mellow, creative strain to start. This way you can enjoy the combination without being overwhelmed by a burst of energy. Again, speak with your budtender to get more information on the possible effects of different strains.

Does the Pairing Affect Your High?

Mixing cannabis and coffee means you’re mixing the two main components: THC and caffeine. There hasn’t been a lot of research on the effects of combining coffee and cannabis, but we do know it’s a pretty successful pairing. After all, there are coffee shops in Netherlands that have been famous for decades for their cannabis-infused coffee.

Some research has found that pairing cannabis and coffee can heighten THC’s effect with some people saying it takes less for them to feel high and that their memory is sharper. Of course, everyone’s experience is different, so others say the combination heightens things like memory loss and paranoia. This contrasting information makes it difficult for researchers to say with confidence what the effects are, so you might have to give it a few mornings to see how it impacts you specifically.

It’s also important to remember that caffeine is a stimulant while cannabis is a depressant. This could have the effect of making you feel alert and sleepy at the same time, or it might make you even more alert and energized. It’s hard to say for sure with so little research. All we can say with confidence is that everybody will have a different experience and it will depend on the strain of cannabis you choose to blend with your coffee.

Cannabis Coffee To-Go

In a couple short months, we’ll see cannabis edibles legalized in Canada. After that, we’ll probably begin to see some cannabis-infused coffee products on the market and possibly even some cannabis coffee shops popping up alongside your favourite haunts. Until then, you’re going to have to make your own cannabis coffee at home!
